Emma Woodhouse is a charming young woman who loves to meddle in the lives of others. She does this not out of bad temper or malice; on the contrary, she enjoys arranging what she believes to be happy marriages. Considering that she succeeded in this once, she decides to continue connecting other people's fates, but she prefers not to think about her own marriage. However, fate will mock her convictions, and of course, the charming Miss Woodhouse will not notice when she herself falls in love. When contemplating marriage, Emma primarily considers the social status, education, manners, and wealth of the potential candidate. Yet everything suggests that calculations in these matters are destined to take a back seat.
"Emma" is the fourth major novel by Jane Austen, completed in 1815. The novel, written after Austen's move to Chawton, was the last published during her lifetime.
