Detective Hercule Poirot receives a letter from a potential client. A wealthy lady - Miss Arundell - writes that she suspects her relatives of trying to kill her: she is currently recovering from a fall down the stairs. According to the nephews of the victim, this incident is the fault of the dog, because it seemed to have left its toy on the stairs, which caused Miss Arundell to trip over it. However, the seemingly simple case immediately becomes complicated when Poirot learns that he received this letter after the death of the rich woman.
The detective undertakes to secretly investigate the alleged murder, because all the woman's relatives have a motive: her wealth should pass to them as an inheritance. However, when it becomes clear that Miss Arundell has rewritten the will, the mysterious deaths resume. Are any of the heirs trying to get rid of competitors? Are these deaths accidental? Hercule Poirot skilfully investigates the case, meticulously collecting evidence to finally name the true cause of the tragedies.
