We tend to dramatize the life around us. What proportion of people in the world live in poverty? How many modern children are vaccinated? How many years do girls from poor countries study? Information about these facts constantly circulates around us, but even highly educated people answer them incorrectly. University lecturers, journalists, experts, directors of multinational companies, Nobel laureates often show weak results. Even chimpanzees, who choose answers randomly, do better. Moreover, the errors tend to lean in one direction — the world is scarier, harsher, and more hopeless than it really is. Obviously, the reason is not in awareness or intellect. All of this is irrational thinking and dramatic instincts that make people exaggerate.
